COLUMBIA, SC (WACH)– There’s a legacy that lives through the wife of a fallen hero. She recognizes its importance.
In 2015 Kassy Alia’s husband, Gregory was killed in the line of duty. He was an officer with the Forest Acres Police Department.
She’s turned his tragic death into inspiration on the day of their anniversary. “To have a chance to take a step back and thank them,” Alia said. “It brings my heart so much joy.”
Thursday brought a chance to drop off community donations and show some special attention to local law officers throughout the Midlands.
After her husband’s death, she created the ‘Heroes in Blue Foundation. This year, they raised enough donations to bring lunches to more than 500 officers and deliver more than $10,000 in gift certificates all collected by more than 40 local restaurants. “We learned in a survey that while 94 percent of police believe that community policing is important,” Alia said. “Only 29 percent say they have the resources to help people in need.”
She knows firsthand what it’s like to have an officer in the family and so, she gives back. “We want to help police be able to make more of a difference and give them the tools and resources they need to continue to help families in need,” Alia said. “And so that’s really where our organization is headed.”
While he may no longer be with us, his legacy lives on in her. “I know it makes my heart feel strong and full of love,” Alia said. “I hope it spreads not only through this room but throughout our whole community to know how much love and support exist here.
Their mission doesn’t end here next week the foundation plans to help the homeless by delivering warm gear to several police departments in the Midlands.
