Heroes In Blue was founded in honor of Forest Acres Police Department Officer Gregory Alia who was killed in the line of duty of September 30, 2015. Officer Alia is remembered for how he served his community with compassion and respect.
Officer Alia’s wife, Kassy Alia, is the President and Founder of Heroes In Blue. Below is her message about how our organization began:
Welcome new friends! My name is Kassy Alia and I am the President and Founder of Heroes In Blue. Below is a picture of me with my husband, Greg Alia, and our son Sal. Greg was my whole heart and my hero. He was killed in the line of duty on September 30, 2015 while responding to a call about a suspicious person. It was 8 a.m. on a Wednesday. Our son turned 6 months old that day. Greg had recently turned 32.
The night after Greg died, I asked for two things. First, I asked that people share stories about Greg so that Sal could learn about the man his father was. Second, I asked that people share stories of cops doing good everywhere. My husband was a hero. Other cops are too. Because of this, I proposed that we start spreading the hashtag #HeroesInBlue.
Greg and I often talked about the current negative attention given to police. He said, “Kassy, for every one bad situation, there are thousands more positive interactions occurring daily that go unnoticed.” Help us tell these stories. Help us show the world who our #HeroesInBlue are. Help us tell the stories about the communities who love them.
Our vision for Heroes In Blue has grown into a charitable organization that is committed to appreciating the compassionate and courageous acts shown by law enforcement daily, to bridging the gap between police and community through empathy and action and to providing immediate support to families in response to tragedy. We were incorporated in the State of South Carolina as a non-profit, charitable organization on March 18th. Currently, our action efforts are focused on South Carolina and it is our plan to grow. You can help us do this by helping to spread the love and sharing those great stories that often go unnoticed.
